If you’re a student looking to get involved in campus life, join an organization, make a difference in the community or just have a great time, the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is your first stop. Think of this office as your connection to more than 80 student organizations that include academic, social, religious and community service groups. CSI works in conjunction with recognized student organizations to host events. Last year, students participated in 1,283 events, 134 of which took place off campus.
Here’s a quick rundown of last year’s CSI activities.
Serving Our Community—and the World
The First-Year Community Action Program (FCAP) gives incoming Adelphi first-year students the opportunity to participate in various volunteer and community service projects prior to the start of classes. Last year, 79 first-year students and 10 FCAP student leaders participated, and this year is off to a great start with 90 students and 10 leaders signed up.
CSI offers plenty of opportunities to serve throughout the year, too. Last year, 1,720 students, faculty and staff pitched in at more than 30 community service events like Panther Day of Service or our Adopt-a-Family program, which provided 11 local families with much-appreciated holiday gifts last year. CSI cosponsored alternative breaks that sent student volunteers to San Francisco and Texas and organized drives to help hurricane victims in Houston and Puerto Rico. Last year, students pitched in to donate 427 pounds of diapers to the Texas Diaper Bank.
Getting That Panther Pride
CSI partnered with University Athletics to pack the stands at four events last year: Panther Kickoff for men’s soccer, the Welcome Back Bash at the men’s and women’s basketball opening games, the ESPN3 Watch Party for basketball, and Pack the Park for softball.
Banishing the Blahs
Looking to take a study break? CSI hosts memorable and student-focused events to enhance your Adelphi experience. Last year, CSI provided students with 29 late-night and 25 weekend programs. Students got to unwind on campus with events like Monday Masterpieces, Paintball on the Quad, trivia nights, and parties such as the Headphone Disco in the Ruth S. Harley University Center. CSI also took students off campus to blast their opponents at laser tag, try zip-lining at The Adventure Park on Long Island or treat themselves to a Tanger Outlets shopping spree. And CSI takes advantage of having New York City on our doorstep by arranging excursions on which students visited museums, shopped for the holidays or cheered on their favorite teams at sporting events.
Supporting Our Commuters
Our commuter students are active and involved, thanks to our Commuter Assistant Program. This past year, 18 commuter assistants held 15 different events for 449 first-year and 61 transfer students.
Adelphi clinched the No. 1 spot for the annual Car Free Day Long Island event this past year. Adelphi beat out all other colleges and universities on Long Island to collect the most pledges (1,144) to be car free or energy efficient for this annual environmental event in September. Commuter assistants and the Commuter Student Organization worked hard to get signatures and put on programs surrounding the event.
The Commuter Student Organization celebrated Adelphi’s commuter students with two Commuter Appreciation Weeks this past year. The weeks included free commuter breakfasts, trips to Broadway and sporting events, an event on automotive safety and how to change a flat tire, and much more!
Going Greek
Many Adelphi students say joining a fraternity or sorority was the best decision they ever made. We’re proud to say that students in our Greek organizations completed over 8,000 community service hours and raised more than $40,000 for charitable organizations. Greek and social fellowship organizations initiated more than 300 new members and their Spring 2018 semester GPA was 3.31.
Taking the Lead
When our students told us they wanted to develop their leadership and professional skills, the Center for Student Involvement teamed up with the Center for Career and Professional Development, the Office of Alumni Relations and the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business to initiate Adelphi’s Leadership Certificate Program. Last year, more than 100 participants completed six workshops in addition to their academic classes and were rewarded for their achievement at the inaugural Leadership Certificate Recognition Awards in April.
Celebrating Diversity
CSI was involved with more than 40 multicultural and diversity programs, including the Multicultural Social, social justice trainings, Transgender Awareness Week and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Annual AIDS Dinner. The Center for Student Involvement also partnered with CSTEP, the Collaboration Project, the Office of Alumni Relations and the Mentoring Program to host the second Lavender and Multicultural Graduation Celebration, an event that honored the accomplishments of more than 20 graduates from diverse backgrounds.
Helping New Students Start Out Right
How much did you love your Orientation? Experience it again—this time as an Orientation leader. CSI trains Orientation leaders in campus safety, Title IX, academic advisement, diversity, effective communication and other topics to foster their success. Many of our Orientation leaders call their second (and third and fourth) Orientations their most memorable Adelphi experiences.
