Robert Weiss, the artistic director of the Carolina Ballet, has created a ballet based on Moravec's "Tempest Fantasy."
In 2004 Paul Moravec, who holds the distinguished title of university professor at Adelphi University, won the Pultizer Prize for his composition, Tempest Fantasy. The piece inspired Robert Weiss, the artistic director of the Carolina Ballet, to create a ballet of the same name, based on Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. In March 2016, Carolina Ballet will perform Tempest Fantasy at the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater of the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina.
In a recent article published by Ballet News (“Carolina Ballet’s Shakespeare Festival Continues With Tempest Fantasy”), Weiss said Moravec’s “very beautiful, haunting music” enabled him to depict the complexity of the Shakespeare play.
Moravec’s current significant composing project is The Shining, based on the Stephen King novel, to premiere at Minnesota Opera in May 2016.
