“The President’s Series on Critical Issues” by Adelphi President Robert A. Scott with New York State Senator Dean Skelos.

Adelphi University continues “The President’s Series on Critical Issues” presented by Adelphi President Robert A. Scott with guest speaker New York State Senator Dean Skelos. The lecture on “Cutting Taxes and Creating Jobs” will take place on Friday, November 1, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. in the Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. A light breakfast will be served. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and reservations are required by October 30.

Senator Skelos, the highest-ranking Republican official in state government, has long been an outspoken advocate for reducing taxes, controlling government spending and helping the private sector create new jobs. He was elected Majority Leader of the Senate by his colleagues on two occasions, in June 2008 and January 2011. In November 2012, Senator Skelos was re-elected to his fifteenth term in the New York State Senate. He now serves as Republican Conference Leader, Temporary President and co-Leader of the State Senate’s historic Majority governing coalition.

Under Senator Skelos’ leadership, Republicans have reached across the aisle to work with Governor Cuomo to turn New York around. During that time, the Legislature enacted a property tax cap, expanded the DNA databank and passed three early state budgets.

To fight fraud, waste and abuse in the state’s Medicaid program and save billions of dollars for state and local taxpayers, Senator Skelos authored the nation’s most sweeping Medicaid fraud law in 2006. Senator Skelos also wrote the law eliminating the unfair New York City “Commuter Tax” and, during his tenure as the Senate Aging Committee Chairman, the law creating the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (“EPIC”) program. Additionally, he played a prominent role in eliminating the statute-of-limitations in cases of rape and violent sexual assault, as well as created the New York State Sex Offender Registry.

Born and raised in Rockville Centre, Senator Skelos received a B.A. in history from Washington College in Maryland and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Fordham University School of Law.

Dr. Robert A. Scott launched Adelphi’s President’s Series on Critical Issues in 2001 to provide students, scholars and distinguished guests with an intimate forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national and global topics.
