Paul Doherty ’62 is an Adelphi alumnus and former coach of the Adelphi men’s lacrosse team. In 2002, colleagues and friends of Doherty’s joined together to establish “The Paul J. Doherty Memorial Scholarship” in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to the University.

Doherty came to Adelphi as a student from East Meadow, New York in the late 1950s. During his undergraduate years, he made his mark as a student-athlete on Adelphi’s soccer and lacrosse fields. During his junior and senior years, he provided his leadership as captain of both teams.

He distinguished himself as the goalkeeper of the lacrosse team, leading the nation in saves in 1960. In 1961, in the position of attack, he led the team in scoring. Doherty was a two-time recipient of Adelphi’s “Most Outstanding Student-Athlete” award.

In 1967, he was inducted into the Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame. Founded in 1961, the Hall of Fame honors former Adelphi athletes, coaches, and friends who have distinguished themselves during their time at the University or thereafter.

In 1970, Doherty returned to Adelphi as the head men’s lacrosse coach, a position he held until 1991. During that period, he led his teams to 11 NCAA tournament bids and two national championships. In his 22 years as coach, Doherty had a record of 184-105. For his extraordinary contributions to Adelphi athletics, Doherty was honored by the University as the 2002 recipient of the Frank Cassell Memorial Award.

The Paul J. Doherty Memorial Scholarship is awarded to members of the Adelphi men’s lacrosse team who embody the outstanding dedication, drive and commitment that Coach Doherty displayed as both player and coach. The inaugural scholarship was awarded in 2013.
