New position: bilingual social worker
Angela Papalia, LMSW, of Selden, has rejoined the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program as a bilingual social worker. With 15 years of experience as a social worker, Ms. Papalia has worked extensively with women and their families dealing with breast cancer and understands the unique challenges people face. As a Spanish-speaking social worker, her role includes providing patient navigation to individuals who are facing a diagnosis, supportive counseling and providing bilingual support groups. Her focus is to assist women and individuals in obtaining care when cultural, financial and social barriers prevent them from doing so
In 2004, Ms. Papalia initiated the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s collaboration with Nassau County Medical Center. Her return to that position will allow for expansion to begin Spanish-language support groups at community centers for patients and/or their families and expand services to patients at local hospitals. Ms. Papalia was named the BMW Health Hero in 2008 and received the Outstanding Field Instructor Award for 2010-2011 from Adelphi University School of Social Work. She was featured in Pulse magazine.
