Anthropology discovery by Anagnostis Agelarakis. Press Club of LI Awards, Brian Lym, Danny McCabe, and more.

Seven Adelphi students who received awards at the annual Press Club of Long Island Awards dinner on June 5 were mentioned in an article on NYMetroParents.com. Adelphi’s student newspaper, The Delphian won “Best College Newspaper” and Liza Burby, senior adjunct professor in the Communications Department, won second place in the feature/lifestyle category.


Professor and Chair of Adelphi’s Department of Anthropology, Anagnostis Agelarakis, was mentioned in Yahoo! News Canada, for his discovery of a 2,500-year-old bone and a piece of an ancient arrow. The ulna, part of the forearm, which Agelarakis brought back from Greece, was x-rayed to get further information on the nature of the injury.


 After losing his father to a heart attack last year, Dylan Daxon of Rockbridge, NY said he was forced to grow up a lot faster than expected. Now, his community of Milan is holding a memorial ride fundraiser for his father who loved motorcycles. This fall, Daxon, 18, will be attending Adelphi on a full golf scholarship. Brian Lym was mentioned in an article on Against the Grain for his appointment as the new dean of Adelphi University Libraries. Prior to coming to Adelphi, Lym served as the interim chief librarian and professor at Medgar Evers College and head of instruction and research services at Hunter College.


An article in the Long Island Herald announced Danny McCabe as the new director of Athletics and Campus Recreation at Adelphi. McCabe was the former associate director at Hofstra University and grew up around both schools. McCabe says he is happy to be back in his hometown.


Adelphi alum Richard Smith, ’82, M.B.A. ’86, recently joined Bank of the Ozarks as executive vice president. Mr. Smith will lead the banks newest office location in New York, NY. An expert in real estate finance, Mr. Smith has more than 25 years of real estate experience and has held senior lending positions in banks, finance, and investment companies. Robert E. Hartwell’s retirement from Adelphi was featured in the Valley Stream Herald. A resident of Valley Stream, the former athletic director retired this year after 26 years of service at Adelphi.


Elaine Boylan, senior associate director of Adelphi’s Center for Career Development, shared some of her most commonly used interview questions with finance website Darwin’s Money. The article focused on the types of questions asked of accounting and finance professionals.


Assistant Vice President of Student Financial Services and Financial Aid Compliance at Adelphi University, Sheryl Mihopulos, was quoted in an article on NerdScholar about student loan debt. Mihopulos stressed that Adelphi students receive information on loan repayment status with each new award letter.
