Ambassador Nirupam Sen, permanent representative of India to the United Nations, will address “India’s Role in the World: Internal, Regional, and International Perspectives,” at Adelphi University.  Ambassador Sen’s presentation will be held on Monday, November 19, 2007, at 3:00 PM, in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the International Initiatives Committee. (Due to a scheduling conflict, the originally scheduled Ambassador Ulf Hjertonsson will not be able to present at Adelphi.)

Ambassador Sen joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1969, and has held key diplomatic positions in posts such as Budapest; London; Moscow; Sofia, Bulgaria; and Oslo, Norway. Prior to his United Nations assignment in August 2004, he was high commissioner of India, in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Sen previously served as deputy secretary-in-charge of East Europe and the Americas and joint secretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs. He holds a post-graduate degree in history from Delhi University. He has taught at the National Defense College in New Delhi, and written a dissertation on solidarity at the University of Oxford, U.K.

Adelphi’s International Initiatives Committee (IIC) is a campus-wide group of faculty, administrators, and students charged with infusing courses and campus events with internationalized content.  The IIC allows the University to offer dynamic programs such as its acclaimed Ambassador Series in intimate settings so students, faculty, and the public have the opportunity to hear first-hand, global perspectives on issues of international concern.
