Derner professor Joseph Newirth reflects on passing of Joyce Brothers.

Dr. Joyce Brothers, 85, passed away on Monday, May 13. She was a noted psychologist and media personality having been a part of the Today Show team and appearing on the  Tonight Show with Johnny Carson over 100 times. (see video clips on the NBC Sightly News website). She was on a variety of game shows, including the $64,000 Question, where she was first introduced to the television audience.

In 1988, her Kings Feature Syndicate column about intimacy in marriage referenced Dr. Joseph Newirth of Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies.

In reflecting on Dr. Brothers passing Newirth said, “She made it safe for people to acknowledge psychological difficulties, problems in living, and seek professional help. [She] helped to make psychotherapy and mental health part of our expectations.”
