Golfers will tee off to honor Adelphi University coaching legend Ronald Davies ’59—and to support student athletes—on Monday, September 24, at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, New York.
Adelphi’s 30th Annual Golf Classic recognizes Davies, who coached baseball, squash and first-year soccer teams that earned honors regionally and nationally. In 1959, he started coaching squash, winning eight Metropolitan Championships in 15 years at the helm of that program.
In 1964, Davies added head coaching duties for baseball, elevating the program to national prominence and making four trips to the NCAA Division II College World Series. During a coaching career which lasted 39 years on the diamond, Davies was honored as the East Coast Conference (ECC) Coach of the Year and coached 75 baseball players to All-Conference honors.
As an Adelphi student, Davies earned varsity letters in soccer, squash, basketball and baseball. He was named the Outstanding Freshman Athlete in 1955 and Most Valuable Player for the squash and baseball teams in 1958. In 1968, he was inducted into the Adelphi Athletics Hall of Fame.
In addition to his business administration degree from Adelphi, Davies earned a Bachelor of Laws and a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School. He currently resides in Saint James, New York, with his wife, June (Aitken) Davies ’58, and is a practicing attorney.
Proceeds from the golf classic benefit Adelphi’s Athletic Scholarship Endowment, with plans for an endowed scholarship in Davies’ name to come. It is open to golfers as well as those who wish to attend only the evening cocktail reception and tribute to Coach Davies. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and a shotgun start for golfers starts at 12:30 p.m.
Sponsors of the event include the Coughlan Group and Chartwells, among many others.
