Virtual Town Hall: Medical Insurance Transition
Event Actions
Learn more about the transition from Cigna to Aetna as one of our medical insurance carriers, effective January 1, 2026.
In advance of our annual open enrollment period this November, we want to share an important early update about a planned change to Adelphi University’s benefits offerings for 2026. Adelphi will transition from Cigna to Aetna as one of our medical insurance carriers. We will continue to offer EmblemHealth as an option.
Adelphi is committed to minimizing disruption and supporting a smooth transition to Aetna. The decision has been carefully evaluated and supported by Executive Leadership, and it has been shared with our unions.
Why We’re Making This Change
- Cost savings: Staying with Cigna in 2026 would have led to a significant cost increase for both employees and the University. Aetna is offering a comparable benefits package at a lower cost increase.
- Higher education expertise: Aetna already serves 12 colleges and universities in New York and New Jersey, covering more than 16,000 members.
- Broader provider network: Most doctors currently in Cigna’s network are expected to be in the larger Aetna network. Additionally, many providers who were previously out-of-network with Cigna may now be covered in-network. If you choose to keep seeing a provider who remains out-of-network, you can do so at the out-of-network cost.
- Concierge-level support: Aetna’s customer service includes a dedicated phone line for Adelphi employees, as well as 24/7 digital access to support and resources.
