Adelphi University School of Social Work Department of Continuing Education and Professional Development is offering Master’s level professionals in social work and related behavioral health fields the opportunity to complete the 350 clock hour educational requirement to apply for the NYS OASAS credential in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling (CASAC-T).
The Postgraduate Certificate in Addictions course promotes the psychodynamic understanding of current theoretical and practical approaches to the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders. Leading experts from the addictions field will discuss:
- The neurobiology of addiction
- Psychopharmacology
- Diagnostic assessment
- Motivational interviewing
- Empirically based evidence treatment approaches with adolescents and adults across a broad spectrum of culturally diverse populations
Topics incorporate an integrated approach to substance use disorder and mental health comorbidity, including behavioral addictions: sex, gambling and tobacco use. The course will synthesize lecture, case presentation and classroom discussion for 45 credit hours towards the completion of the New York State CASAC requirements of addiction-specific education and training (Section 1).

- Advanced degree students completing their master’s (pending discussion with their adviser)

You will receive a unique Zoom Video Conferencing link that will provide you entry into the workshop one day prior to the event. Course Options
Select one of two options and complete the CASAC-T education requirements by February 2021:
For Graduate Students of Adelphi University who have completed an elective in Addictions (Adelphi-SW727)
PAC 1—45 clock hours
October 17, 2020–March 6, 2021
Saturday mornings 15 classes, 9:00 pm – 12:00 pm
Total Cost: $1,850
For all other postgraduate students who have not completed an elective in addiction and need to complete Section 1 of NYS OASAS training:
PAC 2—85 clock hours
October 17, 2020–March 6, 2021
Saturday mornings 15 classes, 9:00 pm – 12:00 pm
And online coursework: 20 hours
Total Cost: $2,450
Included at the end of the course is the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training. This training is an additional 4 CEs and is Mandatory for PAC 2 students and strongly encouraged for PAC 1 students. (If you have already taken the SBIRT workshop you do not need to take it again).

Lead Faculty
Peter Juliano, LMSW, CASAC
Peter Juliano, LMSW, CASAC is a Licensed Master Social Worker and Credential Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor specializing in the fields of addiction treatment and mental health. Juliano holds a master’s degree from Stony Brook University and a Bachelors degree from Binghamton University.
Juliano is currently the Family Services Coordinator for Outreach House II where he supervises family services for adolescents and their families. He believes that family therapy is an integral component in the therapeutic process.
He is active in community work to raise awareness about the importance of substance use treatment and has spoken at multiple Long Island High Schools.
Juliano specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing in his clinical work.
He is an instructor for Outreach Training Institute and specializes in teaching individual and group counseling, treatment planning and clinical documentation, co-occurring disorders, theories of human development, cognitive behavioral therapy, family counseling, and ethics.
In addition, Juliano works as a medical social worker for John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and provides Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment to hospital patients. Juliano believes in the importance of referring patients to treatment, especially during the ongoing opioid epidemic on Long Island.
He is passionate about treating people suffering from addiction and mental health disorders and believes in the need for educating clinicians in the most effective and latest evidenced-based practices.
Juliano is excited to bring his knowledge and experience to the instructing team at Adelphi University.
Claudia Peters Ragni, CASAC
Claudia Peters Ragni, CASAC is the director and owner of The Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery, Long Island’s premier outpatient programs for the treatment of alcoholism and chemical dependency, and serves as a member of the Leadership Council of The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Past President of the Long Island Chapter of Employee Assistance Professionals Association, she continues to serve on the Board.
Ragni has been honored by The New York City Police Department Peer Support Program for her work at Ground Zero following the events of September 11, 2001, and by New Perspectives for her work in the prevention of substance abuse and violence in schools. She is particularly proud of her volunteer work with Long Island Recovery Advocates, a grassroots political organization lobbying for equality and parity in the medical treatment of addicted persons, and has worked hard to facilitate passage of important legislation that guarantees treatment to the family members of the addicted person. In 2004, she received the Fisher of Men Humanitarian Award at the 15th annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast.
Payment Plan
We offer a payment plan for those who wish to pay in installments:
- $350 deposit for PAC 1, $950 for PAC 2
- $500 by November 21
- $500 by December 19
- $500 by January 16
Tuition Remission
If your agency takes student fieldwork placements from Adelphi, then the agency may be eligible for tuition remission. This may entitle you to a 30% discount off tuition pending your agency approval.

Policy and Application Instructions
Continuing Education Credits
This program has been approved for the following continuing education credits:
- Social Workers

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form. See full credentialing information and CEUs New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”
Cancellation Policy
No refund can be made for cancellation seven or fewer working days before the onset of the postgraduate certificate program. Cancellations occurring more than seven working days before the onset of the program will result in a refund less the amount of the deposit. Requests for refunds must be received in writing.
