Instructor
Melorra Sochet, LCSW, JD

Melorra Sochet, LCSW, JD, is a psychotherapist, supervisor and educator with extensive training and experience working with couples, individuals and families affected by trauma and relationship distress. She is certified in and a supervisor of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT). She has also completed all levels of training in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). In addition, she is a graduate of the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis’ two-year Trauma Studies Program.
Ms. Sochet integrates these approaches into her teaching at Adelphi University and the Ackerman Institute for the Family, as well as in her private practice, where she helps clients heal from trauma, strengthen relationships and develop deeper understanding and connection.
During the pandemic, Ms. Sochet was invited to write a column about her work with couples. Her articles appear in Keeping It Together on the Psychology Today website. She also teaches clinicians at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and Adelphi University.
Before becoming a psychotherapist, Ms. Sochet practiced public interest law and worked in social policy for the New York City Mayor’s Office, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the Vera Institute of Justice, the New York City Council, the New Jersey Office of the Child Advocate and other nonprofit organizations. She was selected for the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s prestigious leadership development program. This background gives her particular insight into the challenges faced by professionals working in demanding, high-pressure environments and informs her work with clients navigating career stress, burnout and workplace trauma.
Ms. Sochet is a graduate of Columbia College, Northeastern University School of Law and New York University’s Silver School of Social Work.
