Diagnosed in 2024 Breast Cancer Survivor and Advocate
Debra Williams was diagnosed in 2024, at 58, with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Her treatment plan included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. From the beginning, she was surrounded by an incredible team of caregivers. Debra is profoundly grateful for the care and empathy of her oncologist, nurse Kathy, and the infusion staff, as well as the love and encouragement of her family and friends. Debra also credits Angela Papalia, her social worker at the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, for being a constant source of strength and empowerment. Recently, Debra found joy and connection at “Seas the Day,” the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s Creative Arts Forum where she bonded with others navigating similar paths. With her faith and her “village” of loved ones and the dedicated Mt. Sinai medical team, Debra faced her diagnosis with courage and resilience. Today, she proudly embraces her identity as a breast cancer warrior, inspiring others with her story.
Katerina Dinas-Raptis
Diagnosed in 2013 Founder of Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, Inc.
Katerina D. Raptis was first diagnosed with Stage 1, estrogen-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in June 2012 at just 32 years old. Her treatment included a double mastectomy, 12 weeks of Adriamycin-Taxol chemotherapy, reconstruction, and Tamoxifen. Nine years later, in June 2021, she faced a second diagnosis of Stage 2 breast cancer with a high Oncotype DX recurrence score. This time, her treatment involved removal of Axillary lymph nodes on her right arm, tumor removal on her right side, ovary and fallopian tube removal, 4 cycles of EC chemotherapy, 12 cycles of Paclitaxel, 12 weeks of radiation, and ongoing Letrozole therapy. Katerina credits her family and close friends as her greatest source of strength, lifting her up during her most difficult moments. Her husband and son were her purpose, inspiring her to push through every challenge. Fitness, faith, and a positive mindset also played key roles in her journey, giving her both physical and emotional resilience.
Although she didn’t use the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s services, Katerina is connected to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program through her nonprofit, Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, which funds patient navigators to guide women through their treatments. This partnership has created a circle of strength, compassion and support for women facing breast cancer. Watching this partnership grow and knowing Katerina has played a role in helping women feel seen, supported and empowered has been one of the most meaningful parts of her journey. Katerina’s advice to others is heartfelt and powerful: “Even in the darkest moments, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Trust the journey, lean on those who love you, and never stop believing in the light ahead. You will spread your wings once again and fly like a butterfly.”
Lori Fagan
Diagnosed in 2012 Adelphi Breast Cancer Program Hotline Volunteer
Lori Fagan was diagnosed with Stage 2 ductal carcinoma in January 2012, just before her 55th birthday. Initially, her treatment plan included a lumpectomy followed by radiation. However, after receiving her Oncotype test results, it was determined she was a candidate for chemotherapy. While surrounded by the support of family, friends, and her church, Lori still felt isolated without connections to others who had experienced breast cancer. Lori wishes she had known about the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, believing it could have offered the comfort and understanding she needed at that time.
Today, Lori dedicates herself to supporting others on their breast cancer journeys. For the past three years, she has volunteered with the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, answering hotline calls and offering guidance. She credits her faith, family, and friends as her greatest sources of strength during her diagnosis and shares this heartfelt advice: “Look for angels everywhere—they are there for you.”
