Graduate Assistantships

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available to qualified students. Assistantships are awarded at the discretion of the department. They may be awarded based on academic merit and some may take financial need into consideration. Students receiving such appointments are required to devote a specified number of hours each week during the academic year to assist in teaching, research, or other technical services, as assigned by their department. In return for such services, the student is granted a remission of tuition. In addition, some assistantships offer stipends. Assistantships and/or stipends may impact your eligibility for other sources of financial aid. In addition, taxes may be withheld.

Application and special provisions: Contact your graduate school/department to obtain applications and specific eligibility requirements.

Graduate Athletic Awards

In response to the change in NCAA guidelines in relation to an additional year of athletic eligibility for certain student athletes due to the COVID pandemic, the University, so as not to financially penalize these students, has agreed to a one-time exception which will allow student athletes who are awarded athletic grants, in their graduate year of study, to be permitted to retain this institutional aid as well as other academic, alumni, and recognition awards.

This “stacking’ of awards will only be permitted while a student athlete has NCAA athletic eligibility and is enrolled in a graduate degree seeking program while meeting all of the published criteria for receiving any institutionally awarded aid.

Under no circumstances can these institutional aid awards be combined with graduate assistantships.

Award packages must be reviewed for eligibility and compliance by Student Financial Services before the award amounts are finalized.

Institutional scholarships and grants are applicable to tuition and, in some cases, fees. The University reserves the right to adjust the financial assistance previously awarded when these awards in combination with other sources of assistance exceed the cost of tuition and fees, including BUT not limited to Veterans Affairs educational benefits, external awards and state scholarships and grants. Undergraduate scholarships and grants are generally awarded for full-time enrollment. The University’s full-time attendance enrollment requirement may be eliminated in cases of qualifying disabilities as deemed appropriate by the Student Access Office. For more information about this waiver of the full-time enrollment requirement, please contact the One-Stop Student Services Center. Note about non-degree, certificate programs or programs not offered at our main Garden City campus: Please consult with the One-Stop Student Services Center about your aid eligibility since this may differ from what is available to students enrolled in programs leading to a degree or those who attend our other locations.
