Through readings, multimedia resources, discussions, and creative projects, students will examine the African roots of Cuban storytelling. Students will explore the cultural, historical, and artistic elements that shape Cuban folkloric narrative, song, and dance and the lasting impact and storytelling legacy of African culture on the Cuban experience. Examine the role of African traditions and folklore in developing Cuban narratives, including their impact on worldview, themes, characters, song, dance, and storytelling techniques.Describe the African roots of Cuban storytelling and the connections between the two regions.Develop storytelling skills through creative retelling of an Afro-Cuban folktale.Create a video essay that presents research into the African influence on Cuban visual arts. *The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only.
