NUR 487: Nursing Care Of The Evolving Family

Students will focus on family-centered nursing care during the childbearing and childbearing stages of the lifecycle, paying special attention to the health promotion and health maintenance of pregnant woman, children, and their families. Emphasis will be on the importance of establishing a safe and effective healthcare environment.

Learning Goals

1. Implement family-centered care thatreflects an understanding of:a. Health promotion guidelines, with the concomitant need for anticipatoryguidance, for clients and families during the childbearing and childrearing years.b. Techniques for ensuring patient safety.2. Implement evidence-based nursinginterventions for patients and their families throughout the childbearing andchildrearing years, from inception through adolescence.3. Interpret and incorporate patient datafindings, including nursing, medical,laboratory, radiographic, pharmacologic, psychosocial and other pertinent data,when formulating and implementing a plan of care for clients and their familiesduring the childbearing and childrearing years.4. Safely administer medications to women and children, from birth throughadolescence.5. Appropriately assess and manage pain in laboring and postpartum women and pediatric patients.7. Demonstrate critical thinking skills when formulating and implementing plansof care for patients and families during the childbearing and childrearing years.8. Synthesize patient assessment data with data from other sources to deliverprofessional nursing care to patients and their families during the childbearingand childrearing periods.9. Recognize and respect cultural differences regarding childbearing and childrearing practices.10. Incorporate families’ medically-safe personal and cultural preferences when caring for pregnant clients, pediatric patients, and their families.11. Incorporate evidence from the natural and social sciences, including geneticsand nutrition, in the care of the patients and their families during thechildbearing and childrearing periods.12. Integrate best nursing practice to promote optimal patient care outcomes ofpatients and their families during the childbearing and childrearing periods.13.
