NUR 398: Nursing Adults I

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this course, the student will:Demonstrate knowledge of the pathophysiology, clinicalmanifestations, and medical treatment of patients with alteredoxygenation, circulation, hematologic, endocrine, gastrointestinaland neurologic function.• Gather and record patient data findings, including nursing,medical, laboratory, radiographic, pharmacologic, andpsychosocial and other pertinent data, when caring for medicalsurgicalpatients.• Discuss the principles of prioritizing nursing care when caring forthe medical-surgical patient.Discuss the principles of safe medication administration in themedical-surgical setting.• Demonstrate ability to organize patient data in a coherent mannerusing clinical reasoning skills and generate appropriate nursingdiagnosis/interventions.• Use the nursing process as a framework to plan care for themedical-surgical patient.• Discuss personal and cultural influences on an individual'sreaction to the illness experience.• Develop strategies for inter-professional collaboration andcommunication which reflect respect for personal and culturaldifferences.• Identify medically safe personal and cultural preferences whichmay be encountered when caring for medical-surgical patients.Identify evidence based nursing interventions which promote optimal patient care outcomes in the medical-surgical patient • Incorporated evidence based nursing interventions into the plan of care.• Discuss the uses of information technologies in the medical surgical setting. • Explain patient privacy guidelines and regulations related to informtics and communication technology.• Demonstrate behavior consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and ANA Scope and Standard of Practice • Describe ethical and legal considerations relevant to the care of adult patients. • Compare the roles and perspectives of the nursing profession with other healthcare professionals. • Discuss the role of the nurse as an advocate for patients in a clinical setting. • Demonstrate a professional demeanor and respect of rights of patients and their families in medical-surgical settings.
