Date & Time: May 12–19, 2027 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Location: Hybrid, flex or in-person in NYC

The issue of race is very much in the therapy room, even when it goes unspoken. It quietly affects communication, conflicts, connection, and emotional safety that a couple experiences.

As clinicians we can help the couple recognize when ruptures, defensiveness, and misunderstandings are rooted in their partner’s racial identity, lived experiences, and systemic stressors.

Through case vignettes, education and discussion, clinicians will recognize the role and toll of race in and on a couple; how to engage couples in conversations about race without creating rupture; and how to navigate their own biases and countertransference when working with racially diverse couples.

This workshop is part of the Couple Therapy Series.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between relational conflict and race-based stressors in couples.
  2. Understand the impact of systemic racism, racial trauma and lived experiences on racially diverse couples.
  3. Identify ways clinicians can facilitate conversations about race in couples therapy.
  4. Recognize clinical blind spots that may minimize, avoid or pathologize race-related challenges in couples.
  5. Examine common racialized stressors that may arise in racially diverse couples.
