In the current era of integration between the criminal legal system and immigration enforcement, the school-to-deportation pipeline describes how school discipline practices can funnel immigrant students, particularly those from Latinx and other marginalized communities, into the immigration system.

For the almost three-quarters of a million undocumented students who are guaranteed public education in the U.S., small infractions can lead to drastic consequences. Even the anxiety surrounding this potentiality can be harmful to learning for immigrant students. Social workers play an important role in supporting targeted students and challenging harmful policies within their communities. Factors that contribute to the school-to-deportation pipeline will be explored, and specific actionable steps that social workers and schools can take will be discussed and applied to a case study.
