SBIRT training provides social workers with evidence-based resources to work effectively with clients at risk for substance use disorders in a variety of settings (e.g., hospitals, outpatient or primary care settings, community health and mental health centers). 

Participants will learn how to screen for substance use and assess the level of risk; briefly intervene to enhance client insight and motivation toward behavioral change using methods such as Motivational Interviewing, and refer to treatment clients needing specialized care. This training equips participants with skills applicable to clients facing a variety of issues.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least two screening tools and their applied uses for clients using substances.
  • Name at least three principles of Motivational Interviewing as a brief intervention.
  • Differentiate between at-risk clients and clients in need of referrals to treatment.

About the Instructor

Alison LaMonica, LCSW-R, CASAC

   Alison LaMonica

Alison LaMonica is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker- R, CASAC with 30 years of experience working with mental health and substance use disorders. She is a graduate from Adelphi University with a Bachelors of Social Welfare, Master of Social Work, and CASAC. Alison is currently the Executive Clinical Director at the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery, Long Island’s premier outpatient programs for the treatment of alcoholism and substance use disorders. She has worked as a clinician for almost two decades and transitioned into leadership roles for the past decade assisting in program development and implementation with new and experienced staff in the field.

Her experience includes working with adolescents, families, first responders, and veterans’ populations. She is experienced with both individuals and groups in various settings, such as public schools, community outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers, and the criminal justice system. These vast experiences have enabled Alison to have a unique perspective and evidence-based success in the recognition and treatment of co-occurring disorders.

Alison is easily known for her passion and ability to engage both patients and co-workers in the appropriate respective therapeutic relationship. She believes wholeheartedly at providing psychoeducation around the needs and meeting individuals where they are at so they can be empowered to make long lasting change. She has developed a positive working relationship with many community-based providers and is recognized for her compassionate and direct approach with those she works with.

To receive approved continuing education credits, participants must attend the entire symposium and submit a completed evaluation form.

Cancellation Policy

Please note that we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations made within seven business days of the event or for no-shows. However, if you notify us at least 24 hours in advance, we can issue a credit toward a future workshop. No credit will be provided for cancellations made less than 24 hours before the event
