Dear Adelphi Community,
I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Carolyn Springer, PhD, associate professor of psychology, to the role of Director of African, Black and Caribbean Studies. In this position, Dr. Springer will lead this program’s important work exploring the experiences of Black people, emphasizing a broad and interdisciplinary range of scholarly perspectives and courses of study, including history, literature and the arts, social sciences, culture and society, and contemporary issues. The program offers an undergraduate minor in African, Black, and Caribbean Studies and is an important component of Adelphi’s commitment to furthering diversity, equity and inclusion at the University and in our students’ development as advocates for equality and social justice.
Dr. Springer joined Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology in 2003 as assistant professor of psychology and was promoted to the rank of associate professor in 2009. In addition to undergraduate psychology courses, her teaching includes graduate courses in school psychology and mental health counseling and general master’s psychology students, as well as courses for doctoral clinical psychology students. She also supervises doctoral dissertations, master’s theses, and independent study research projects. Dr. Springer is actively engaged throughout the University, currently serving on the Faculty of Color Task Force, as chair of the Human Subjects Review Committee, as a member of the Faculty Senate, and as an advisory board member for the Center for African, Black and Caribbean Studies, among other initiatives.
Additionally, Dr. Springer is a teaching supervisor in the Department of Medical Education at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where she assists faculty and residents with medical research and quality improvement projects. She previously served the hospital as teaching supervisor for the Child and Adult Psychiatry Training Program. Prior to Adelphi, Dr. Springer was an adjunct professor and academic advisor in the Social Sciences Department of New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Education, and held adjunct professor positions at Bloomfield College and Purchase College.
Dr. Springer earned a PhD and Master of Philosophy degree in social psychology from Columbia University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where she co-directed two HIV/AIDS research studies.
Dr. Springer succeeds Marsha Darling, Professor of History & Interdisciplinary Studies, who will be retiring later this year after 20 years in the role of professor and Director of African, Black and Caribbean Studies at Adelphi. The Adelphi community is deeply grateful for Dr. Darling’s tireless efforts to lead and further develop this program, and we celebrate the program’s impact throughout the University—particularly its partnerships with eleven academic departments to integrate coursework focusing on Black people or people of color. We thank Dr. Darling for her visionary leadership in African, Black, and Caribbean Studies to illuminate and address timely issues in social justice and racial inequality.
I’m confident that Dr. Springer is prepared and well-qualified to assume leadership of African, Black, and Caribbean Studies and to continue furthering the program’s reach and impact on Adelphi and our students.
