This course addresses intense transference and countertransference enactments in the context of trauma-related treatment. It will suggest coping mechanisms to enable therapists to optimally handle these reactions and turn them into therapeutic tools. Clinical illustrations will be used in order to facilitate students’ understanding and ability to navigate these experiences.
Kate Szymanski, PhD
Dr. Kate Szymanski is a NYS licensed psychologist and certified psychoanalyst with a private practice in Garden City. She is an Associate Professor at the Derner School of Psychology. Her main areas of interest are traumatization (Chronic and Acute) in children, adolescents and adults, resiliency, posttraumatic growth, trauma-centered psychotherapy, stigma of mental illness, mentalization and suicide, somatic awareness, emotional intelligence,
family systems and ambiguous loss, trauma assessment (implicit), psychodynamic treatment of traumatized adolescents and children, poverty and mental health, depression and creativity. She co-edited the book Expressions of the Unspeakable: Narratives of Trauma and is a popular invited speaker in the area of trauma.

Cancellation Policy
Full refunds are issued for cancellations made up to 7 working days before the event. Cancellations of less than 7 days for any reason, or no-shows are not refunded. Credit towards a future event/workshop are issued for cancellations less than 7 days and up to 24 hours before the event. No credit is issued for cancellations less than 24 hours before the events or no-shows.
