Assistant Professor Dr. Kelly Swartz (Department of English) and Associate Professor John McDermott (Department of Theatre) will discuss “The World of Jane Austen”.

On Saturday, November 6 in the Olmsted Theater, Assistant Professor Dr. Kelly Swartz (Department of English) and Associate Professor John McDermott (Department of Theatre) will discuss “The World of Jane Austen”. Dr.Swartz, who teaches “Race, Sex and Class in Jane Austen” will talk about interesting aspects of Hamill’s adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, now in the Olmsted through November 7, discussing certain textual specifics of the novel (for example, the addition by Hamill of The Gossips) and may touch briefly on some history of adapting Austen’s novels for the stage and/or of dramatic performance represented in Austen. John McDermott, who teaches Scene Design, will discuss the style of the late Georgian and early Regency periods and his work on three Austen adaptations for the stage, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Persuasion. This event is free and open to the public and will occur between the matinee and evening performances of the Department of Theatre production of Sense and Sensibility, from 4:45 – 5:45pm.
