It really is an unthinkable thing to come out “stronger” on the other side of tragedy, but Bill and Terri Tomoff, parents of Ryan, now 26, a five-time cancer survivor, believe that their entire lives have been altered to the point that they are “giving back” and paying it forward as much as possible.

Through the most difficult of times, the Tomoffs share that their family has been surrounded by expertise, care and compassion, that is impossible to comprehend. They assert that they have received comfort, hope and support from countless fronts – family, friends, community, healthcare professionals (Dr. Shad selflessly at their side for 23 years…), charities (Special Love, Just Tryan It, etc.), and many families who have walked this road with their own children – and this has ignited a burning passion in them to do all they can to help bring comfort and hope to others.

Post- traumatic growth (PTG) is a term coined by Richard Tedeschi, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and his colleague, Lawrence Calhoun, PhD. Dozens of studies have shown that trauma survivors can change in profound ways. And it goes well beyond resilience, or bouncing back from adversity. “With posttraumatic growth, a person who has faced difficult challenges doesn’t just return to baseline, which is what happens with resilience,” explains Tedeschi. “They change in fundamental, sometimes dramatic, ways.”

Terri Tomoff has published a book The Focused Fight, A Childhood Cancer Journey: From Mayhem to Miracles, an informative and transformative memoir regarding Ryan’s distinction of being a 5X cancer survivor from childhood through adult cancers.
