Seeing New Patterns through Old Designs

Schools were created to be the great equalizer. Except, too often, they are not. Words such as “diversity,” “inclusion,” and other “languages of appeasement” (Stewart, 2017) are placed into our institutional narrative to project systems that are innovative, admirable, or just. But do institutions, particularly music education programs, achieve their espoused values for diversity work or at least come close to meeting them? This webinar reimagines “diversity work” in music education programs as a product of institutional designs, evident in patterns of intentions and decisions.
