Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD): Considerations for Effective Interdisciplinary Care
Event Actions
Participants will increase familiarity with medications used in treatment of Opioid Use Disorders, learn how to create a supportive environment for clients, and discuss the evidence and available resources for MOUD.
Overview
Participants will learn how to screen for substance use and assess the level of risk; briefly intervene to enhance client insight and motivation toward behavioral change using methods such as Motivational Interviewing and refer to treatment clients needing specialized care. This training equips participants with skills applicable to clients facing a variety of issues.

Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe the major differences between medications commonly used in treatment of Opioid Use Disorders.
- Participants will learn how to create a supportive environment for clients receiving MOUD.
- Participants will be able to discuss the efficacy of MOUD.
- Participants will be able to identify local, state, and federal resources to support their clients receiving MOUD.

Presenter Bio
Dr. Bernard Showers, DSW, LCSW, earned his MSW at Shippensburg University in 2010, where he is now an Adjunct Professor. Mr. Showers also works as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore, MD, and Simmons University School of Social Work in Boston, MA. In the fall of 2018, he was awarded the Dean’s Teaching Award at the University of Maryland due to instructional excellence.
In September 2016, he attended the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers Train-the-Trainer event and is now one of 1,500 MINT members worldwide. Mr. Showers has trained aspiring and active independent practitioners at many colleges, universities, governmental agencies, and companies around the United States. In addition to Motivational Interviewing, Mr. Showers has developed, presented, and published several continuing education workshops on family involvement in substance use treatment, ASAM criteria, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and group therapy.
Bernard earned his DSW as part of the inaugural class of The University of Kentucky’s Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) program. In July 2021, Bernard Showers was the lead author on the manuscript Medication for Opioid Use Disorder in Rural America: A Review of the Literature published in the APA’s Journal of Rural Mental Health.

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.
Cancellation Policy
Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
