Hear Professor Christopher Davis talk about the connection between the Haitian Revolution and the sport of Cricket through the work of CLR James, showing the ways the descendants of the enslaved developed their own cultures and freed themselves.

Christopher Davis

Professor Davis will analyze the writings of famed Trinidadian scholar CLR James, highlighting the connections of his work on the history of the Haitian Revolution and his love of the sport of cricket to his world views on Pan-Africanism and Self-Determination in the colonial Caribbean.

Davis will explore two of the most significant writings of famed Trinidadian scholar CLR James: “The Black Jacobins,” in which James documents the legends of the Haitian Revolution, and “Beyond a Boundary,” a series of semi-autobiographical sketches about James’ relationship with the gentleman’s game of cricket. Despite the vast differences in topics, both books reflect his grander views on Colonialism, Pan-Africanism, Self-Determination, and the Independence Movement in the Colonial Caribbean.
