Eleni Voumvoulaki will be joining us virtually from Eleutherna, Rethymno, Crete Greece to discuss the styles and legacy of Cretan macrame, knots and other stitching styles.

This presentation will take place from the Eleutherna Village on the island of Crete at the town taverna, Panorama. The women of the community will be present at this “workshop” and will join in the discussion on the significance of this traditional art form, its history, function, and symbolism.

Traditional Desia by Eleni Voumvoulaki - Cretan macrame, knots and other stitching styles

Eleni Voumvoulaki is an agriculturalist, cook, mother, and grandmother, whose passion is traditional Cretan textile art.

“Ασχολούμαι με τα οικοκυρικά, τη φροντίδα των εγγονιών και τη μαγειρική. Αγαπημένη ασχολία είναι η παραδοσιακή λαϊκή τέχνη πάνω στο ύφασμα. Αυτές είναι η Κρητική βελονιά, Δεσιά, Λευκαδίτικη, και Σταυροβελονιά.”

This presentation will primarily be in Greek with some English translation and discussion.
