The Use of SELF-Leadership for Mental Health Providers

As social workers and counselors, we know our use of self has a powerful impact on others.
This three-hour introductory course equips those who attend with a non-pathologizing, strengths-based way to effectively use their SELF in interactions with coworkers and supervisees using the lens of Internal Family Systems.
The eight C’s of Internal Family Systems’ SELF leadership will be offered as a guiding framework for effective use of self in your practice. Participants will learn how to recognize exiles and protectors within themselves when they emerge in professional interactions and consider how to utilize the always available SELF in challenging situations.
This is not a course that will certify you to use Internal Family Systems with your clients.
Course Learning Objectives
- Describe the core assumptions of Internal Family Systems, including multiplicity of mind, parts, Self, and the non-pathologizing stance.
- Differentiate among common categories of parts, including managers, firefighters, and exiles, and identify how these may emerge in relationships with others.
- Explain the concept of self-leadership and identify qualities associated with Self: calm, curiousity, compassion, clarity, courage, confidence, creativity, and connectedness.

Credentialing Information

About the Instructor
Connie Palmer, LCSW
Connie Palmer is a licensed clinical social worker who is an experienced teacher, therapist and school counselor with more than thirty years of experience working with youth and their families. She is currently the Clinical Training Director for Imagine, a Center for Coping with Loss in Mountainside, NJ. She presents seminars on various topics such as: grief and loss, resilience, shame, parenting, anti-bullying, depression and anxiety.
Cancellation Policy
Please note that we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations made within seven business days of the event or for no-shows. However, if you notify us at least 24 hours in advance, we can issue a credit toward a future workshop. No credit will be provided for cancellations made less than 24 hours before the event.
