In this SPARK Center Reading Series event, President Michael Balboni ’81, JD, will discuss how the book Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI (2024) traces the role of information systems throughout human history and examines the distinct challenges artificial intelligence poses for humanity’s future. Drawing on the book in his lectures on AI, geopolitics, homeland security and cybersecurity, President Balboni will share how its ideas have informed his thinking on these issues.

Michael Balboni

President Balboni ’81, JD, was appointed in June 2026 as the 11th president of Adelphi University, becoming the first Adelphi alumnus and first Long Island native to hold the role. He brings more than three decades of experience in homeland security, public safety and crisis management, including 19 years in New York State government as deputy secretary for public safety and homeland security advisor to the governor, as well as service in the State Senate and Assembly. Before returning to Adelphi, he led RedLand Strategies Inc., advising clients on government relations, cybersecurity and crisis communications.

Students are invited to hear President Balboni’s perspective on how the ideas in Nexus connect to real-world challenges in security, technology and leadership.
