EEC 680: Autism, Severe And Multiple Disabilities

Introduces preK-12 instructional design, functional skills development and intensive educational needs training for individuals with autism; and severe and multiple disabilities. Students will examine legal mandates and ethical considerations, and explore through coursework and fieldwork, recommended practices for assessment, curriculum, and instructional methods.

Learning Goals

This course will provide students with the opportunity to learn about various disabilities that may result in a child having intensive educational needs including instructional design, functional skills development, and related areas as well as how to use them. "Recommended practices" for assessment, curriculum, and instructional methods for students with intensive needs will be addressed, as well as legal mandates and ethics related to service provision. Issues related to serving culturally/linguistically diverse exceptional children have been interwoven across topic areas covered in this course. Throughout this learning experience, students will be encouraged to integrate information provided in class to solve authentic case studies and develop appropriate IFSPs/IEPs, transition plans, and alternative assessments for children with intensive needs.Note: This course requires ten hours of field work experience
