SPH 672: Communications Systems For Individuals With Severe Disability

This course focuses on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) modalities and individuals that may benefit from them. AAC assessment and intervention for individuals with severe communication and physical disabilities will be explored. Students will have hands-on experience with communication technology. Other topics will include behavior management, family counseling, and advocacy.

Learning Goals

COURSE OBJECTIVES/PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, students will learn about : 1. the nature of communication modalities and social aspects of communication for individuals with severe disabilities (ASHA III-C)2. assessment of individuals with severe disabilities for communication systems involving various communication modalities with consideration for social aspects of communication (ASHA III-D, IV-G1)3. intervention strategies for individuals with severe disabilities with regard to communication modalities and social aspects of communication (ASHA III-D & III-F, IV-G2)4. ethical decision making (ASHA III-E ) and respect for cultural diversity (ASHA IV-G3)5. the role of families as team members (ASHA IV-G3)6. professional behaviors in the academic setting (ASHA IV-G3)7. principles of evidence-based practice (ASHA III-F)8. professional writing skills (ASHA IV-B)
