PUB 303: Health And Human Rights

Students will explore the nature of health through a human rights perspective, analyzing critical problems in public health, access to medicine, and health-resource allocation in the US and other countries.

Learning Goals

Demonstrate knowledge of the basic covenants on human rights and their implications for health.Identify the key principles of human rights as they apply to the health sector. Explain nation-states’ obligations and mechanisms to protect and promote human rights within the health sector.Describe the human rights implications of specific policies and strategies for prioritizing health interventions, including impact on the poor, children, prisoners, and other vulnerable populations.Formulate a strategy for low-income countries to address equity in the accessibility of medications and medical care.Describe international and local response mechanisms, including assessment reports, commissions of inquiry, special task forces, treaties, and local legislation, to assist victims of violations of human rights around health or health care. Analyze strategies to monitor the application of human rights principles in the health sector.
