BIO 209: Emerging Trends In Genetics
2 credits
Nursing students will be introduced to genetics and genomics, providing a foundation of the key concepts in these areas including the nature of the gene and the causes and patterns of inheritance of genetic disorders, together with the ethical issues faced by medical professionals in genetics.

Learning Goals
Goals and objectives of the course: By the end of the course you should be able to demonstrate that you know:- what a gene is at the molecular level, including an outline of the pathway of gene expression- the inheritance of chromosomes, genes, and both autosomal and sex-linked traits in humans, including interpreting and generating pedigrees and recognizing when genetic counseling is indicated- how to identify chromosomal abnormalities, genetic mutation, and their connections with human genetic diseases, including techniques for prenatal diagnosis and interpretation of a karyotype- the importance of multiple genetic factors and the environment in determining phenotype- the basics of genomic analysis and its role in medical diagnosis and treatment plans- and be aware of and sensitive to the ethical, cultural, and spiritual issues connected with genetic and genomic information in medical practice, including privacy of patient genetic information
