Dr. Michael Sean Funk
Program Director of Higher and Postsecondary Education; Clinical Associate Professor, Department Chair: Administration, Leadership, and Technology at NYU
Dr. Michael Sean Funk is a Clinical Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, as well as the Faculty Director of Academic Excellence Initiatives at New York University. With more than two decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Funk has led numerous professional development sessions for faculty, administrators, and staff across the nation and internationally, focusing on transforming institutional cultures through holistic advising, inclusive leadership, and dialogical engagement. His scholarship centers on equity, diversity, and inclusion, and his recent publications include a co-authored chapter on racism and justice in the Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice (4th edition) anthology, for which he will serve as co-editor of the forthcoming 5th edition of Readings for Diversity and Social Justice. He also authored “Creating Inclusive Classrooms as an Imperative for Historically Underrepresented Groups in Higher Education” in College at the Crossroads: Taking Sides on Contested Issues (2018). Among his many honors, Dr. Funk is the recipient of the 2023 NYU Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award, the 2022 NYU Nia Award for Faculty Excellence, the 2021 Steinhardt Champion of Equity Heart and Soul Award, the 2018 Steinhardt Teaching Excellence Award, and a 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from NYU’s College of Arts and Science Academic Achievement Program.
