Course Design for a Device-Free Classroom

Faculty are welcome to join us for a workshop on strategies to reduce students’ dependence on AI and digital distractions.
While the use of AI and computers in the classroom offers advantages and opportunities in certain situations, there are also benefits of an approach where students are restricted from use of their devices in the classroom. Computers and cell phones can be sources of distraction and reduce student engagement. AI can be a crutch that stunts cognitive development and critical thinking skills.
This workshop will focus on ideas for approaches and practices where students do not rely so much on AI and do not get distracted by their own devices. Some of the areas we will cover include:
- Ground rules of a classroom that is (usually) device-free for the students;
- Responsibilities and practices for the professor;
- Assessments/Assignments; and
- Lectures and discussions.
