Mission Statement
The Institute for Parenting is an interdisciplinary center established to ensure and enhance the health and well-being of children by helping to support, improve, and develop the capacity of their parents and others who exert significant influence on their development such as service providers, teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and other community leaders to provide nurturing and developmentally appropriate environments within a culturally sensitive framework.
The Institute seeks to achieve these goals through research, education, training and service involving both parents as well as professionals who work with parents of young children and developing families.
The Adelphi Institute for Parenting was approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2005.
To achieve these goals, the Institute will:
- conduct research to identify the skills, support, and resources necessary for parents to carry out their roles successfully
- conduct research to identify the gaps in service, support, and resources for parents that affect their parenting ability
- evaluate effective parenting practices
- develop support services for parents
- provide information and training to service providers in the community
- provide referral services for additional resources for parents
- serve as advocates for children and parents.
The Institute also provides educational opportunities for Adelphi baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral students pursuing degrees in psychology, education, social work and nursing. Through their academic studies, internships, and research assistantships, students gain the knowledge, skills, and understanding of how to work effectively with parents. Collaborative partnerships with other institutions of higher education and community organizations serving parents and children enrich the research, education and service goals of the Institute.
