The Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership is a multi-disciplinary resource dedicated to responding to the leadership challenges facing nonprofits on Long Island. With an Advisory Council of academics and nonprofit professionals, the Center will sponsor workshops and events for the nonprofit community, offer training for boards of directors and new & emerging leaders, and serve as a clearinghouse to identify and assess available resources.
Housed in the School of Social Work, the Center offers services that focus on four areas:
- leadership development, targeting new and emerging leaders
- leadership support, providing resources for current executive directors
- leadership transition, working with departing leaders and their organizations
- nonprofit governance, focusing on the crucial work of the board of directors and its leadership role.
The Center addresses both leader development (individual skills) and leadership development (organizational skills). The delivery models vary according to need and include formal training, peer-to-peer networking, mentoring and onsite programs.
Background
The Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership began as a grassroots effort to address leadership transition and development in nonprofit organizations on Long Island. A group of concerned nonprofit leaders met monthly for a year to seek solutions to these leadership challenges. This group included representatives from the Long Island Community Foundation, the Rauch Foundation, the United Way of Long Island, and the dean and associate dean from the School of Social Work at Adelphi University, as well as executive directors of nonprofit organizations.
With their support, a Long Island Leadership Summit was held at Adelphi as a first step in responding to the needs of the nonprofit community. This full-day event attracted nearly 300 nonprofit professionals and board members.
The creation of the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership grew out of their resounding consensus for a Long Island-based resource that would provide help and guidance in dealing with leadership transitions, board leadership, and leadership development.
Funding Support
Funding for the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership comes from the generous support of JP Morgan Chase, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, the Long Island Community Foundation and Adelphi University.
Initial support for the Center came from the United Way of Long Island, the Long Island Community Foundation and the Rauch Foundation.
