The Center for Career and Professional Development has established guidelines and expectations for recruiting on campus.

Purpose

The Adelphi University Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) is committed to facilitating meaningful, ethical, and lawful employment opportunities for students and alumni. This policy outlines the standards and expectations for employers seeking to recruit through CCPD-managed platforms and services.

Who is Governed by This Policy?

Employers recruiting Adelphi University students and alumni.

Policy

CCPD reserves the right to review, approve, or deny any job or internship posting submitted by an employer. The Center will not post or promote employment opportunities that are deemed inappropriate, unlawful, exploitative, or inconsistent with the mission, values, and community standards of Adelphi University.

Employers seeking to recruit Adelphi University students for internships and jobs are expected to follow Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) guidelines, as indicated by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Professional Standards for University Relations and Recruiting, in addition to Adelphi University guidelines. Failure to do so will terminate any collaboration with the Center for Career and Professional Development.

Procedures

To ensure alignment with the Center for Career and Professional Development’s policies and the mission of Adelphi University, employers must adhere to the following steps when submitting employment opportunities:

  • Employers must create an account on the CCPD-approved recruiting platform.
  • All employer accounts are subject to review and verification by CCPD staff.
  • Employers may be asked to provide additional documentation (e.g., business license, website, references) to confirm legitimacy.
  • Employers are required to review this policy prior to submitting any postings.
  • Submission of a job posting constitutes agreement to comply with all CCPD policies and applicable laws.

Employers must provide complete and accurate information, including:

  • Position title and description
  • Organization name, contact information and website
  • Job location (remote, hybrid, or in-person)
  • Compensation details (hourly wage, salary, stipend, or commission structure)
  • Required qualifications and responsibilities
  • Incomplete postings will not be approved

CCPD staff will review each posting to ensure compliance with university policies and applicable laws. Postings will be evaluated for:

  • Alignment with Adelphi University’s mission and values
  • Adherence to equal opportunity and non-discrimination standards
  • Transparency and legitimacy of the opportunity

CCPD reserves the right to request clarification or deny postings that do not meet standards.

Once approved, the position will be published on CCPD platforms and made available to students and alumni.

Employers will be notified of approval or denial.

  • CCPD reserves the right to remove postings at any time if concerns arise.
  • Students and alumni may report issues related to job postings or employer conduct.
  • Employers are expected to respond promptly (within three (3) business days) to any CCPD inquiries.

Employers are encouraged to maintain communication with the CCPD regarding their recruiting procedures and processes.

Feedback on candidate experiences may be requested to ensure quality and continuous improvement.

Violations of CCPD policies may result in immediate removal of postings and suspension or termination of employer access.

Repeat or severe violations may lead to permanent disqualification from recruiting through CCPD.

These procedures are designed to protect students and alumni while fostering ethical and productive employer partnerships. The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) reserves the right to modify these procedures as needed. Notifications about modifications to this policy will be promulgated through the appropriate CCPD platform.

This policy is subject to change at the discretion of Adelphi University and the Center for Career and Professional Development, in accordance with the procedures outlined in the university policy review process.

Definitions

Prohibited Opportunities: Employers may not post positions that include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Roles that violate local ordinances, state, or federal laws and regulations.
  • Positions that discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected status. Adelphi University is an equal opportunity employer, committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all candidates, including people of color and those who are, or identify as, members of any marginalized, underserved or underrepresented group. Adelphi is an emerging Hispanic-serving institution, so bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. View our University statement on diversity.
  • In-home positions.
  • Opportunities that require upfront financial investment, including fees for training, materials, or participation.
  • Positions involving deceptive, misleading, or unethical business practices.
  • Roles related to illegal activities or industries inconsistent with university values.
  • Opportunities that lack transparency regarding compensation, job responsibilities, or employer identity.
  • Positions that appear to exploit students or alumni, including those that are unpaid without meeting applicable legal standards.

Compensation and Transparency: All job postings must clearly outline compensation structure (e.g., hourly wage, salary, commission), job responsibilities, and required qualifications. Employers must comply with applicable labor laws, including those governing internships and minimum wage requirements.

Employer Conduct and Accountability: Employers are expected to conduct themselves professionally and ethically in all interactions with Adelphi University students, alumni, and staff. CCPD reserves the right to suspend or terminate employer access to recruiting services if complaints or concerns arise regarding employer practices.

Alignment with University Values: All employment opportunities must align with Adelphi University’s commitment to integrity, equity, inclusion, and student well-being. CCPD maintains sole discretion in determining whether a position aligns with these principles.

Reporting Concerns: Students and alumni are encouraged to report any concerns about job postings or employer conduct to CCPD. All reports will be reviewed and addressed appropriately. Any issues or concerns can be directed to careercounselor@adelphi.edu.

Policy Enforcement: Failure to comply with this policy may result in the removal of job postings, restriction of recruiting privileges, and/or permanent disqualification from CCPD services.

Contact Information: For questions regarding this policy or employer eligibility, please contact the Center for Career and Professional Development.

Start-ups: The Center for Career and Professional Development has established these criteria for identifying appropriate entrepreneurial employment opportunities for promotion through its services. Start-ups must have progressed sufficiently in their business development process so they can:

  • Provide a company name, business address, website, and email address, and identify a principal as a key contact.
  • Verify that they are not seeking potential partners or investors.
  • Offer positions for pay, not just equity.
  • Provide clearly defined organization and position descriptions in Handshake.

Third-Party Recruiters:

  • Must identify themselves as a third-party recruiter in their Handshake employer profile and in all client job announcements.
  • Fees are not charged to the candidate at any time.
  • They must verify in advance whether they are recruiting for their own organizations or for their clients.
  • Third-party firms recruiting for positions within their own organizations must clearly distinguish those opportunities from their client engagements.

Marijuana/Cannabis Industries: We will not accept or post positions related to the use or distribution of medical marijuana. This includes tertiary positions not directly related to the sale or distribution of marijuana/cannabis but are designed to support or advance industries. As the use of marijuana is illegal at the federal level and as a federal contractor and an institution committed to a drug-free campus and workplace, Adelphi University aligns its recruiting policies with federal laws rather than New York State law.
