When It Happens to You, a play by Tawni O’Dell based on her memoir, captures the unquantifiable damage her daughter suffered following a brutal sexual assault. Blending humor with unflinching honesty, the play explores the question: “How does a normal, happy family recover from a trauma of this size and scale?” The production has received rave reviews off-Broadway and in London, and it comes to Adelphi starring acclaimed English actresses Amanda Abbington and Rosie Day with direction by Jez Bond. This is a very special production that is not to be missed.

Proceeds from this show benefit a charitable organization supporting survivors of sexual assault and violence

How often does the committer of a crime escape appropriate punishment? How often do they avoid retribution because a defense team provides just enough reasonable doubt?

And, what about the victim of said crime? Do they recover? Does their life go on unscathed? Or does the ripple effect of an untoward action continue to haunt them far beyond the moment that it took place?

When It Happens To You is a play about a crime. It poses and answers those questions. But in this case, it is not your usual crime thriller where the bad guy is caught in a ray of bullets and glorified media arrests. Because When It Happens To You is about the crime of rape. The consequences of rape do not fade. They metastasize. Regrettably, the collateral damage goes far beyond the brutal crime itself. It invades the peace and tranquility of the survivors. The victim of THIS type of crime is the one who is “branded,” as are their loved ones. And those they have yet to meet are affected in ways they will never truly understand.
