Post-Traumatic Growth in Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Event Actions
As a clinician, you likely engage with parents of children with Autism that experience great struggle and challenge in their parenthood journey.
Course Overview
This stress also impacts child outcomes significantly. You have helped these parents cope, and supported them in experiencing resilience. Imagine that you can be a part of facilitating a possible transformation – of reconstructing the narrative and supporting parents beyond coping and resilience.
Post-traumatic growth (PTG) represents positive psychological change occurring in some who suffered trauma. In this workshop, you will gain an understanding of the unique multilayered compounding parenthood experience of parents of children with ASD, the ways in which these parents uniquely cope, the markers of PTG in these parents, as well as an understanding of how to help facilitate PTG in this population. Dr. Grinman will present some aspects of her most recent research in this topic and share her insights from a qualitative study that looked into the PTG experience of parents of young adult children with ASD.
You will gain an understanding of, but also receive an introductory overview of a set of tools and skills that can support you in the mastery of listening for and nurturing posttraumatic growth.
