Prerequisite: bio 222 or permission of instructor.

Learn the basis of viral taxonomy and the molecular basis of viral structure and taxonomy. Examine the mechanisms of viral pathogenesis in terms of the modes of viral replication, structure, and genetics and study methods of viral cultivation.

This is a graduate course which will examine current research literature in the area of Virology, with the emphasis on animal cell viral life cycles and pathogenenicity. The classes will be held as discussion of both professor provided articles and well as articles obtained by students. The classes will be primarily discussion of the research articles lead by the professor and students alike. The focus will be on the explanation of experimental results and their implications on viral structure, function, cytopathology and pathogenesis.
