Description:

Before the outlaw days of Blackbeard and Bonnet, the Renaissance celebrated “gentlemen” privateers like Drake, Hawkins, and Raleigh. This course surveys the literary, religious, and political texts that fueled global conquest. We’ll explore how Renaissance books romanticized "virtuous" piracy, helping to transform pirates into the attractive (anti)heroes of popular lore.
