EBE 520: Linguistics For Teachers: Psycho/Structural Considerations

Examine the fields of psycho and structural linguistics including the sound systems of language, the meaning and information structures of language, the structure and grammar of language, the role of the psychological in language development. Understand the field of applied linguistics and its application in the diverse classroom.

Learning Goals

• Understand the nature of language and linguistic systems and be able to challenge popular misconceptions about language.• Learn core concepts and theories of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.• Use techniques of linguistic analysis in order to solve questions in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.• Understand the psychological and cognitive processes employed to learn and use language.Reflective Practice• Be able to apply their knowledge of linguistics and linguistic analysis to their instruction in the TESOL or bilingual classroom.
