BIO 222: Genetics
3 credits
Explore the fundamental principles of heredity in plants, animals, and microorganisms, and the application of these principles to human inheritance. Examine the recent advances in biochemical genetics, gene structure, and the physiological action of genes.
Learning Goals
Course Specific Learning OutcomesAt the completion of this course, I hope that you will be able to:• Define key principles of classical and molecular, including the nature of the gene, therelationship between DNA, RNA and protein, and the connection between genotype andphenotype.• Describe how genetic information is passed from parents to offspring, how is contained in acell, how is copied in order to be passed from parents to offspring, the relationship betweengenetic information and physical appearance, and how genetic information is able tochange.• Recognize patterns of inheritance and solve problems related to heredity.• Predict the genetic approach to biological questions and the biological consequences ofaltered genetics processes.• Analyze and explain laboratory techniques used in modern genetics
*The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only. The exact learning goals for each course section in a specific semester will be stated on the syllabus distributed at the start of the semester, and may differ in wording and emphasis from those shown here.
