Online Academy

During Online Academy: Course Development (OA:CD) running from July 29-August 11, participants work through a series of modules—featuring both asynchronous and synchronous materials—that prepare them to utilize the frameworks of Backward Design and Universal Design for Learning to create their own online course.

Applying a deliberate design process and leveraging course materials already at hand, participants create high-quality, engaging and impactful learning environments for their students. OA:CD assists faculty with the identification of further development needs, and with the training/implementation of various technology tools.

Learning Goals

By the end of the Online Academy, participants will be able to:

1. Assess and utilize educational technology effectively in the design and facilitation of their course
2. Incorporate inclusive, compassionate teaching practices that promote student success
3. Apply Backward Design to create a course map that ensures alignment of course objectives, assessments, and learning materials
4. Create one or more content modules of their course in Moodle
5. Transform in-person instruction into synchronous and asynchronous activities

Course Modality

The Online Academy: Course Development Intensive is a cohorted 10-day intensive asynchronous course. New modules are presented each weekday, and each includes readings, resources, and an applied assignment. Optional synchronous workshops/labs will also be held via Zoom throughout the intensive; these sessions are intended to assist and support course development work. Cohort leaders will be available via scheduled office hours.

Assignments are envisioned with the assumption that you will apply the assignment to a particular course. For this purpose, choose a course to focus on when considering the assignment instructions.

Time Commitment

We estimate faculty participants will need to spend 2-4 hours per weekday on Online Academy materials and activities; this includes optional synchronous sessions and individual work time spent on design and creation of course content.

Assignments for days 1-5 are due on Wednesday, August 5 (day 6) and for days 6-10 on Wednesday, August 12 (the day following the final day of the program).

Credentialing

Upon successful completion of the Online Academy (85% or better), participants will be awarded a certificate featuring credentials backed by Accredible.

Additionally, we will explore strategies for creating “AI-proof” assignments that require critical thinking and analysis, as well as “AI-enabled” assignments that integrate AI tools to prompt analysis, reflection, collaboration, and feedback.

OSCQR: Adelphi’s Course Design Rubric (RSI)

Media for All: Crafting Accessible Slideshows and Videos

Join us for an engaging and informative workshop focused on ensuring media inclusivity and accessibility for all. In today’s digital landscape, the significance of crafting content that is easily accessible and comprehensible for diverse audiences cannot be overstated. This workshop is specifically tailored to empower instructors in the creation of media that caters to all audiences. Topics covered include slide formatting, color contrast, URL accessibility, captions, and other essential elements.
