CHI's Emergency Preparedness Poll, Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Bridges to Adelphi Program, Big Apple College Fair.

Statistics from Adelphi’s Center for Health Innovation’s Poll on Emergency Preparedness were cited in an article in the Houston Chronicle on October 17. The survey, conducted in May 2012 revealed that 44% of U.S. adults don’t have first-aid kits and 48% lack emergency supplies for use in the event of catastrophes. On October 21, the Adelphi University Peer Educators, Adelphi Drug and Alcohol Counselor Greta Tiberia, L.M.S.W., and Sergeant James Geraghty helped to coordinate the Impaired Driving Obstacle Course, an event to kick off National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. To better appreciate the dangers of drunk driving, students were given goggles to wear that simulate alcohol impairment. They then tried to navigate a golf cart through an obstacle course set up on Levermore Lawn. The event was covered by CBS TV, FiOS1 News, and Newsday.

The Bridges to Adelphi program was mentioned in an article in Diverse magazine. Mitch Nagler, director of the program was quoted in the article which discussed programs on college campuses that help integrate students with autism spectrum disorders into the campus community.

Adelphi alumnus Joey Elrose ’08, is set to play the lead in “Memphis,” a musical about a DJ who uses music to integrate whites and blacks in the 1950s. The news was announced in Elrose says the message behind the story is relevant to issues facing LGBT today and he hopes that audiences will continue to think about these issues after leaving the show. The show will be performed on Thursday at Stephens Auditorium.

Christine Murphy, assistant vice president of admissions, was interviewed by the New York Post on how students should prepare for a college fair. Among Murphy’s tips were to do your research prior to the fair, ask informed questions, and dress presentably.
