A Primer on Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Case Notes
This workshop is targeted at those new to the social service field, or those who would like a documentation refresher.
Record-keeping best practices will be documented and highlighted to understand and apply to your own field of social work practice and human services. Even if you roll your eyes at the thought of talking about confidentiality and case notes one more time, this workshop will address how even the most experienced practitioners, and the newest case managers, can unknowingly break confidentiality limits and rules. Your progress/case note writing skills will be enhanced, and we will explore how to make and keep time for documentation in an ever changing chaotic and demanding work environment.
Participants will be able to:
- Recognize and understand limits of confidentiality in record keeping and documentation.
- Synthesize and analyze what information should be written in case notes and elevate best practices, according to the NASW Code of Ethics.
- Evaluate and differentiate sample case/progress notes.
- Utilize tips and techniques for writing case notes that can be applied to your work.
Please note: This course will cover a variety of social service record keeping strategies and best practices but is not specifically tied to clinical case note documentation (although it will be covered).

Julianne Pannelli, MSW has worked in the field of Disaster Human Services in the NYC area for over 18 years and holds a Master of Social Work degree from Hunter College School of Social Work, with a concentration in Community Organization, Planning, and Development. She first served as a Disaster Case Manager for the Salvation Army, working with those affected by 9/11 and then with Hurricane Katrina survivors who relocated to NYC. For the past 13+ years, Julianne has worked for Catholic Charities Community Services of the Archdiocese of New York (CCCS) in several roles, including working on multi-agency disaster preparedness and planning initiatives, serving as a Disaster Case Management Supervisor after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, serving as Program Manager and Training and Resource Coordinator for the federally-funded NYS Disaster Case Management Program for Superstorm Sandy, and Program Manager for a multi-agency Disaster Case Management program for Hurricane Evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who relocated to NYC after Hurricane Maria. She is currently the Director of Special Projects for CCCS, which encompasses several non-disaster duties, including organizing and facilitating training for CCCS staff and creating and analyzing CCCS Consumer Satisfaction Surveys.
Renee M. Rawcliffe, LMSW is a social worker, and the Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development at Adelphi University School of Social Work, an adjunct faculty member and faculty field liaison in the OMSW program at AUSSW, and a doctoral student. Rawcliffe spent close to 20 years in direct practice working with vulnerable individuals and communities impacted by disasters and provided leadership and content expert training to staff, communities, and human service organizations responding to these events. As a result of her extensive work in the field, Renee has spent many, many hours completing, reviewing, and evaluating documentation and case notes, and has justified expertise in writing it smart, once and well!

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.
New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.

You will receive a unique Zoom Video Conferencing link that will provide you entry into the workshop one day prior to the event. Please take the time to check your technology prior to the event, as there will be limited opportunities to troubleshoot any issues once the event begins!
Certificates will be emailed within 5 business days of the event, upon completion of the evaluation that is to be completed immediately following the workshop. A link to the evaluation will be provided to you via email.
