Personal Statement

Personal Statement

It is with absolute pleasure and honor to introduce myself as Dr. Michele (Mike) Aquino, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences at Adelphi University. I graduated in 2016 as valedictorian with my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Stony Brook University. I served as adjunct faculty at Adelphi University since my graduation from Adelphi's Exercise Physiology Masters of Science program in 2012. In the Fall semester of 2018, I began my journey as a full-time Assistant Professor at Adelphi University.  With a full semester under my belt, I believe I have made excellent strides towards creating and developing my own teaching style, defining a research agenda, and providing well-rounded service to the University. Furthermore, in this first semester, I have made strides toward generating professional relationships and seeking collaboration opportunities inside and outside of the University.

With respect to teaching in this first semester, I have been pleased with the student's feedback and online evaluations. Furthermore, I was very pleased with the peer evaluation that was provided this semester.  The feedback from my students and peers will continue to allow myself to grow as a professional. I am eager to continue to expand my teaching experiences and promote a high impact learning environment for the students.

In addition, in this first semester, I am continuing to define and refine my research agenda.  I have been actively seeking research opportunities within the Exercise Science Program and attempting to promote collaboration outside of my unit. I already have a manuscript that is under review in a PubMed Peer Reviewed Journal, one of which I am the primary author of. Furthermore, I am also currently collecting data on three studies and am writing a manuscript on a review article.  Within the Human Performance Lab, I am continuing to work on our state-of-the-art BTS force plate system to assure validity and reliability of our measurements.  I am looking forward to continuing to define and refine my research agenda. Furthermore, I am looking forward to working with my colleagues from the Exercise Science program, my peers within the Adelphi University, our students, as well as with colleagues from other institutions both locally and across the country.

Since becoming a full-time faculty member, I have made extraordinary efforts in providing service of the University, its students, and the surrounding community. I currently serve on the School of Education and Health Sciences Technology Committee, Co-Chair of the Exercise Science Committee, Co- Chair of the Exercise Science Annual Research Symposium Committee, and serve as a part of the Exercise Science Advisory Board. Additionally, I have dedicated a significant amount of time and effort in advisement to approximately 20 Exercise Science undergraduate students this past semester. Furthermore, from the Fall 2018 semester, I have begun providing pro bono Physical Therapy services to a student on campus who was in need of care. My external service includes working with Stony Brook University's Doctoral Physical Therapy program as a member of their Candidate Interview Committee and Advisory Board as well as serving as a lab instructor in one of their doctoral courses.  Furthermore, I am serving as a member of the Scientific Review Committee for the International AIESEP Conference to be held at Adelphi University in the Summer of 2019. I also serve as a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy and the Journal of Bodyworks and Movement Therapies Manuscript.  I am also proud to note that I continue to volunteer within the local communities. I have managed to do all of this while maintaining my clinical practice in a part-time capacity as an exclusive health care provider at The Vineyards in Blue Point community through Proactive Physical Therapy where I work with patients with a variety of orthopedic, cardiac and neurologic dysfunctions.
