Personal Statement
Personal Statement
My conception of education begins with the idea of currere, the Latin root of curriculum. Currere, meaning "to run the course," suggests to me that curriculum is best understood as a journey, rather than a set list of skills and standards to memorize.
It follows then, that I advocate creative learning environments in which students actively explore their worlds in order to construct meaning. The arts play a central role in my conception of schooling as does a focus on issues of direct importance to young people, including their natural environment, their home cultures and personal identities, as well as issues of social justice affecting us all.
